► Formal apology (Формальное принесение извинений)
Если вы извиняетесь за ошибки, допущенные в работе, перед руководителем или клиентом, стоит особенно тщательно подбирать слова.
• I want to apologize / I'd like to apologize – «Я хочу (хотел бы) извиниться». Наиболее простой способ принести извинения.
С помощью предлога for вы уточняете, за что именно извиняетесь.
Примеры:
I want to apologize: your book will be delivered only on Friday.
I'd like to apologize for the inconvenience, you will have your laptop repaired by the end of this week.
I want to apologize for the delay in replying.
• Выражения Please accept my sincere apologies / I hope you can accept my apologies имеют сходный смысл – «Пожалуйста, примите мои искренние извинения».
Примеры:
Please accept my sincere apologies. I have already booked another room for you.
I hope you can accept my apologies. I was late for the meeting, because my child had a toothache.
• I owe you an apology – «Я должен перед Вами извиниться».
Примеры:
I owe you an apology, Tom, it was a terrible mistake.
I am afraid I owe you an apology. I should not have said that.
►Informal apology (Извинения в неформальной обстановке)
Если вы извиняетесь в менее официальной обстановке, используйте следующие выражения.
• I am (so, really, genuinely, terribly, extremely) sorry – «Я очень сожалею».
Примеры:
I am so sorry, I have forgotten to bring you the book!
Oh my goodness! I have been late for the meeting. I am genuinely sorry!
• Please forgive me / I hope you can forgive me – «Извините, пожалуйста».
Примеры:
I have bought you the ticket for the wrong date. Please forgive me!
I hope you can forgive me – little Annie has got sick and I have to cancel our dinner.
• My fault / my bad – «Это моя вина».
Примеры:
Oops, I have forgotten to give you her telephone number. My bad.
It's my fault that he hasn't provided you the information.
I had to do a couple of additional tests.
• I shouldn't have... – «Мне не стоило...». После этого выражения следует использовать глагол в форме Past Participle (Participle II).
Примеры:
I shouldn't have put it this way, it was rather rude.
I shouldn't have given him confidential information.
I shouldn't have taken your bag without your permission.
Извиняясь, вы можете сообщить, что именно стало причиной ошибки. В этом случае рекомендуется также уточнить, какие действия вы предприняли или готовы предпринять, чтобы исправить последствия ошибки.
Watch out!
• Глагол borrow означает «брать взаймы». Следует отличать его от глагола lend — «давать взаймы». Если же мы говорим о долге, употреблять следует глагол owe – «быть должным».
Примеры:
A.: Elle wanted to borrow some money from the bank. The bank lent her $1000.
B.: Has she returned the money yet?
A.: No, she still owes $1000 to the bank.
